Lube for MagLev and Modern Cubes
MagLev cubes (magnetic levitation, no springs) still need lubricant. The tracks, pieces, and core all benefit from silicone lube. Lighter formulas work best since MagLev systems already reduce friction. Avoid thick lubes that can slow the magnetic repulsion effect.
If you're lubing a GAN 12, GAN 13, or any MagLev model, use a fast lube like Martian or Lunar on the pieces and a medium lube on the tracks. The combination keeps speed high while adding control on reversals and finger tricks.
What to Use Instead of Rubik's Cube Lube
Don't use WD-40, baby oil, or petroleum-based products. They'll break down ABS plastic, attract dust, and leave sticky residue that worsens over time. Silicone spray from hardware stores often contains solvents that damage puzzle plastic. Stick with cube-specific silicone lubricants designed for ABS and nylon components.
If you're between orders, differential oil (10k-50k weight) works as a temporary substitute. It's silicone-based and won't harm plastic. But competition-grade cube lube is formulated for the exact tolerances and materials of modern speed cubes, such as a4x4 cube. You'll get better results and longer-lasting performance.
How to Apply Rubik's Cube Lube
Disassemble the top layer, apply 2-3 drops of lube to the tracks and pieces, reassemble, and work it in with 50-100 solves. For the core, remove the center cap, add one drop of heavy lube to each screw, and tighten evenly. Less is more. You can always add lube, but removing excess requires a full clean.
