The WeiLong WR M V9 is MoYu's latest flagship 3x3 release and is regarded to be one of the best speedcubes on the market. This blog post will cover everything you need to know about the MoYu WeiLong WR M V9.

"[The WeiLong V9] is a cube that actually makes me want to addictively solve it over and over again."

Cameron Brown

Specifications

The WeiLong WR M V9 comes in three different versions: the Ball-Core UV Coated ($43), which features core magnets and an exterior coating, a MagLev version ($26), which features a MagLev core design, and a Standard Version ($19). Currently, the Standard and MagLev versions are only available with frosted plastic, and the Ball-Core version is only available with UV glossy plastic.

All three versions are 55mm, and the weights of the Standard, MagLev, and Ball-Core respectively are 67g, 71g, and 76g.

"I personally believe that the Ball-Core version should have been the only version to have been released. They could have done it in a UV version, which we have, and a frosted version."

Cameron Brown

Features

All versions come with MoYu's tried-and-tested dual adjustment system, which has 9 different spring compression (or MagLev compression!) settings that vary the speed and stability of the cube.

Surprisingly, none of the versions have adjustable magnets, given that this is MoYu's WeiLong flagship. However, they're not very necessary - the factory-installed magnets are a good strength and will work very well for most people.

The Ball-Core version of the cube features repelling edge magnets, which were first introduced in the GAN 13. These magnets repel the core magnets to increase the cube's range of auto-alignment.

Also, the WeiLong WR M V9 is an extremely durable cube. Some cubes, like the GAN 13, feel great but also feel more fragile. The WeiLong V9 feels more premium, solid, and well-built.

"We often wee that people will yank on corners and corner twist, either by mistake or purposefully, and they will actually damage their cube. We somewhat tried to break [the WeiLong V9]... it was not allowing us to pull out the corner piece, and corner twisting kind of aggressively didn't really seem to damage anything."

Cameron Brown

The Ball-Core is the most durable of the three versions, as corner twisting is the most difficult on it.

The UV coating of the Ball-Core version looks fantastic, and the high-gloss finish enhances the vibrance of the color shades.

Accessories

The accessories included with the WeiLong V9 are relatively standard - nothing too fancy. One difference is that MoYu has recently switched to a clear storage box versus the old one that they've used since the GTS 3.

It's a nice storage box, but can be a little bit hard to use if the tabs don't perfectly align.

A screwdriver, dual adjustment tool, spare gear ring, and tension-evenness tools are also included with the cube.

The cube comes in a very pretty box with holographic text.

Turning Feel

The WeiLong WR M V9 has an incredible turning feel that many cubers enjoy.

"I was actually really surprised that the WeiLong WR M V9 is the first MagLev cube that I actually really enjoy and would use as a main. It's really nice, it's fast (but with setup it's not overly uncontrollable)... it has less of a blocky feel compared to previous WeiLongs, but it just feels really good and flows well."

Cameron Brown

While all three versions have a great feel, the Ball-Core has the best feel after a good setup. It's glide-y, has a nice sturdy feel to it, and flows really well. The core magnets significantly enhance the auto-alignment of the cube and make its turning feel extremely nice.

Sound

The WeiLong WR M V9 is relatively quiet compared to some other speedcubes on the market. Proper lubrication dampens the sound even further, which is definitely a plus for parents who are concerned about cube sounds.

Setup

Out of the box, the WeiLong WR M V9 isn't very good.

"It's crazy how different these cubes feel out of the box [compared to after setup]. They're all insanely fast to the point where they're not really controllable, they're a lot more clacky, [and] they're a lot more loud."

Cameron Brown

However, after proper setup, the feel and performance of the cube significantly improve.

"I went from not really liking it out of the box, to - this is, like I said, one of my favorite cubes. It's just good, like it feels right using this cube."

Cameron Brown

Performance

The performance of the WeiLong WR M V9 is exceptionally good. It's been used for incredibly fast averages and improved the times of many cubers, which says a lot given how good modern 3x3 speedcubes already are.

One interesting note: most MagLev cubes suffer in corner-cutting in some level, but the WeiLong v9 doesn't. It corner cuts so easily, to the point where it feels like a regular spring mechanism.

Conclusion

The WeiLong WR M V9 is an incredible cube that has gained immense popularity among cubers of all skill levels. It combines an addictively fluid turning feel, a dampened turning sound, and superb performance into one flagship 3x3.

The table below summarizes Cameron's thoughts on all three versions of the cube:

"These are an absolute slam dunk. I'm really glad that MoYu did release these because there was a little bit of fear that the YS3 M might be the replacement for the WeiLong series."
