Ball-Core features
I bought the Moyu RS3M V5 with ball core and UV out of curiousity. Regular price for the RS3M V5 is $24, but SCS had it on sale during Black Friday so I got this cube for $19. I performed 500 solves on this cube before posting this review. I purchased SuperNova service from SCS and have added Lunar lube twice. I have the cube set up on adjustment "1" (loosest), with the spring backed out about a half turn.
PROS
Smooth and clacky during metronome exercises, getting progressively more clacky as the TPS increases. Corner cutting is excellent, and the cube really rewards fast turns. It will forward corner all the way past 45 degrees (50?), and backward cut at about 22 degrees at my settings. I prefer UV coating on stickerless cubes, and Moyu's coating is as good as, if not better than Gan's. Removing the center caps is easy to do without tools. The plastic feels nice and twisting is very forgiving. The price I paid for this cube represents a good value, with the regular price being about right.
CONS
Adjusting spring tension requires a screwdriver (provided) and other tension adjustments require the provided tool. Magnets are not adjustable, though they are strong enough to provide indication they are working, both by feel and sound. (There is no auto alignment effect.) This adds to the already large amount of sound that comes from this cube when solving at speed. It is a loud cube, from the plastic, to the corner cuts, to the magnets, there is a lot of sound such that solving this while people or watching TV, or in public, will reward you with a stink eye. Finally, if you want this with a ball core and/or UV coating, the only option is to purchase it with the robot box. The robot box makes a nice display piece, but is added cost without added performance.
VERDICT
This is a very good cube, and if you can pick it up on sale, at a good price. I don't find myself reaching for this cube as much as my mains due to the loudness. The Guhong Pro is just as enjoyable to solve, but much quieter (and cheaper, though the Guhong Pro isn't available with UV coating while the RS3M V5 requires the package to include the robot box). This cube isn't top tier, like a Gan 12, Gan 15, Tornado V3, or Moyu WRM V9, which I count as my mains, but it isn't much of a step down from those, either. On my turning feel ranking, I currently have this (and the Guhong Pro) as 9s, vs. my mains which are 10s. Although, considering price, perhaps it provides commensurate value if ultimate technology? Considering AO100, this is very similar to my mains, so whereas I ranking it somewhere between 4 and 5 stars, I will round up from 4.5, though slightly below the Guhong Pro.
Strengths:
- Cheap, but with practically all the flagship features (see below)
- UV coating helps with grip (plus shiny)
- Simple, iconic adjustment system with reasonable OH range
- Surprisingly light and papery feel
- Ball-core helps with stability
- No adjustable magnets makes turn-feel consistent throughout
Weaknesses:
- Though better than 56 mm, I think it is too close and causes me more fingertrick complications than the 54 mm Guhong
- Weight distribution seems highly concentrated in the center ball-core (as expected), but this resulting papery feel is also something I am not used to and don't particularly enjoy
- Need to glue to corner and edge split pieces together, or else they snap easily
- Eats lube like crazy (good for a consistent feel during a competition though)
- Rather loud (less enjoyable experience too)
Overall, the strengths definitely outweigh the weaknesses and this is an excellent OH cube with similar results to my main, the Guhong Pro M. It has slightly less enjoyable turning, but definitely a valuable purchase for anyone looking to get a budget OH cube that many also consider the best.
This was for my Grandson, it's his favorite so far.
I'm still need to learn to solve, instead of peeling off the stickers, like I did in the 70's.
The robot is really cool. Cube does cube things as expected. I like however after one unfortunate slip out of my hands the corner piece shattered in half :( big sad. Not very robot
This is my tied main for untimed solving. It’s not stable enough for me for top speed, but for consistent solves I love it, very smooth and easy to have no pauses on this cube. I also LOVE the robot.
